Mapping the future for Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd

Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd is a leading construction company, based near Silverstone, which operates across England and Wales.

Established in 1955, the company has grown into a main contractor undertaking major construction and civil engineering projects.

It has built several sports-related buildings in recent years, including the London 2012 Olympic Handball Arena (now known as the Copper Box), a pit lane development at Silverstone Circuit including the Silverstone Wing, and the Amex Stadium, home of Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club.

It also undertakes civil engineering works including major earthworks and enabling, highways and multi-storey car parks, demolition and remedial works and rail-related infrastructure projects.

Because of the sheer breadth of projects the business gets involved in, it needs to keep a close eye on where and when its 500+-strong workforce is deployed, to ensure each project is properly resourced with staff possessing the right skills and experience.

Quiet Storm was tasked with developing a bespoke application for the business that effectively maps out and allocates the correct staff to each project, based on their skills, location and availability, to ensure it is optimising the capacity of its workforce at all times.

Virtual match-making

The application is built around an excel database, but can be accessed via a secure online portal.

It’s a resource planner which gives the business the ability to match staff – and workers – to jobs, both now and in the future, enabling it to map out its resource requirements over the short- to medium-terms.

Each member of staff is recorded in a Data Protection Act 2018/GDPR-compliant database alongside individual information including their job title, skillset, location and availability.

When it comes to allocating staff to projects, managers can simply set the parameters they are looking for and the dashboard will automatically list all the available members of staff for that project, and rank their suitability based upon the criteria chosen and the information the database holds.

The user can then make an informed decision about which staff to allocate to a particular project, based on reliable, real-time data.

Testimonial

Andrew Scott, Buckingham’s Business Development Director, said:

“Buckingham Group Contracting is a major construction company with a turnover exceeding £500m. As a total construction solutions provider, we work on a wide range of construction projects across the UK at any given time.

“Allocating the correct resource to each one can be extremely challenging. The dashboard that Quiet Storm has created for us enables us to take a holistic view of all the projects we are working on and allocate available resources in the most optimal way, to maximise our capacity and ensure we have the right people, with the right skills, on every project we undertake. The application has made a difficult task extremely straightforward and has become a fundamental part of our resource planning.”
