Safety Training Video Maximises Impact By Blindfolding Workforce

Working in a quarry and operating massive equipment requires care and concentration. Safety procedures must be followed to the letter – always.  Building materials group Breedon Aggregates were looking for new ways to get the safety message across to staff.

“The health and safety of our employees is the single most important consideration for us,” said Stephen Jacobs, Breedon’s Head of Communications. “Quiet Storm know our business well and I asked them to come up with some ideas for a series of training videos that would really get our colleagues’ attention.  As expected, they ran with the brief and gave me exactly what I asked for: a series of different and imaginative concepts.”

The first in the series was a ‘sensory’ video, which highlighted avoidable accidents and the dangers of complacency.

“The video was very powerful,” added Stephen Jacobs. “It showed the shocking consequences of people not following the rules.  Wearing the blindfold drew in the listener and harnessed the power of their imagination, which doubled the impact of the accident when it was ultimately revealed on screen.  The simple message then flashed up: ‘Just because you do something every day doesn’t mean you can take shortcuts. If you do, you might as well do it blindfolded.  Quiet Storm wrote the script, employed the actors and set up and filmed the scenario at one of our quarries.  It had a real impact on everyone who saw it and we were really pleased with the result.”
